A worn speedometer cable, a bouncing needle, or a tired gauge head can make a classic Defender’s speed reading more guesswork than information. The PRC7373LED takes a different approach. Instead of relying on the mechanical speedometer cable that drives the original PRC7373 unit, this MPH speedometer reads your speed by GPS, so the cable, transfer box drive, and gearing variables are no longer part of the equation.

The unit is a 12/24V gauge with dual OLED displays for trip and total distance built into the same case. It has a 100mm (3.94 in) waterproof black dial, a stainless steel bezel, and a push button trip reset, so it keeps the clean, functional look a Defender dash should have while upgrading what happens behind the needle. Odometer readings are recorded only while the unit is powered, and the settings can be adjusted to suit different wheel sizes.

This speedometer is designed for Defender 90, 110, and 130 L316 models built up to VIN WA159806, the end of the 1998 model year. That is the same window covered by the original cable driven PRC7373. Because it works by GPS rather than through the speedometer cable, it is a sensible choice for Rovers whose cable drive has become unreliable or whose tire size has changed since the factory calibration. Installation means fitting the gauge in the instrument panel and making the required power and ground connections in place of the cable. The original PRC7373 was not specified for North American Specification Defender 90 L316 models with the 3.9 liter V8 EFI engine, so NAS owners should confirm their VIN with us before ordering.

Will this speedometer fit my Defender?

How is this different from the original PRC7373 speedometer?

The original PRC7373 is driven by the mechanical speedometer cable. The PRC7373LED gets its speed from GPS instead, so cable wear, routing, and gearing changes no longer affect the reading. It also has OLED trip and total displays, a waterproof dial, and a stainless steel bezel.

Do I still need a speedometer cable?

No. This unit does not use the speedometer cable. It installs in the instrument panel and needs power and ground connections, and it runs on both 12V and 24V systems.
