ERR4996 ERR3443 Hayden Severe Duty Fan Clutch Land Rover V8

  • $91.88

This is the Hayden severe duty fan clutch for the Land Rover V8, our upgraded replacement for the Genuine Land Rover ERR4996 and ERR3443 viscous couplings. The factory unit is a known weak point on these engines. As it ages it tends to leak its silicone fluid, freeze up, or stop engaging, and the result is poor airflow at idle and low speed, exactly when the V8 is most likely to run hot. Swapping in a stronger clutch is one of the smartest cooling upgrades you can make on these Rovers.

Hayden builds this as a severe duty thermal clutch. A bimetallic coil reads the air coming off the radiator and locks the clutch up harder as temperatures climb, pulling far more air through the radiator when the engine is working. When engaged it drives the fan at roughly 80 to 90 percent of shaft speed for strong cooling, then backs down to about 20 to 30 percent when the extra airflow is not needed, which keeps fan noise and parasitic drag in check.

Fits:
Discovery I (1994 to 1999) 3.9 and 4.0 liter Rover V8 Petrol/Gas
Discovery II (1999 to 2002) 4.0 liter Rover V8 Petrol/Gas
Discovery II (1999 to 2002) 4.6 liter Rover V8 Petrol/Gas, requires the earlier 1999 to 2002 fan
Range Rover Classic (1995) Rover V8 Petrol/Gas, serpentine belt only
Range Rover P38 (1995 to 2002) 4.0 and 4.6 liter Rover V8 Petrol/Gas
Defender 90 (1997) 4.0 liter Rover V8 Petrol/Gas, serpentine belt only

Will this replace my ERR4996 or ERR3443 viscous coupling?

Yes. This Hayden severe duty clutch covers both the earlier ERR3443 and the later ERR4996, fitting the Rover V8 in the Discovery I and II, the Range Rover Classic and P38, and the Defender 90. Match it to your existing clutch and mount and it drops in as a stronger replacement.

How is the severe duty clutch better than the factory unit?

The factory viscous coupling tends to weaken, leak, or seize as it ages, which lets the engine run hot at idle and low speed. This Hayden clutch uses a thermal coil that locks up harder as the radiator heats, driving the fan at about 80 to 90 percent of shaft speed when engaged for much stronger airflow, then easing off when it is not needed to limit noise and drag.
