Tom Wood's TWDC-D2F Front Double Cardan Shaft Discovery 2

The front driveshaft on a Discovery 2 L318 works hard. It runs close to the heat of the catalytic converter, it operates at an angle from the factory, and that angle only gets steeper once a lift and larger tires go on. Over years of use the joints wear, and a worn front shaft can bring vibration, clunking, and eventually failure. The Tom Wood's TWDC-D2F front double cardan driveshaft is a built to order replacement designed to handle those demands on a daily driven or lifted Rover.

The Discovery 2 L318 left the factory with a double cardan joint on the front shaft, and the TWDC-D2F keeps that layout. Two universal joints are paired at the transfer case end and joined by a centering yoke with a greaseable center ball, which splits the operating angle so each joint works through a gentler angle. Tom Wood's builds this shaft with a larger spline stub than stock and a forged slip yoke. Because the shaft sits so close to the catalytic converter, regular greasing of the center ball and joints is important for a long service life.

Every Tom Wood's Land Rover shaft uses Gold Seal 1310 series universal joints. The 1310 series is the most widely used universal joint in the world, found in countless Ford, GM, Jeep, and Dodge applications, and it is very close in size and strength to the factory Land Rover universal joint. If a joint ever needs replacing, you can find one at nearly any driveline shop or parts counter.

This shaft bolts directly to the factory transfer case and front differential flanges with no adapters required. Tom Wood's recommends this conventional double cardan design for Rovers up to roughly 76mm (3 in) of lift. On a Discovery 2 L318 with more lift than that, correct driveline geometry may call for Tom Wood's multiple double cardan shaft instead.
