Tom Wood's TWDC-D1F Front Double Cardan Shaft Discovery 1
Once a Discovery 1 is lifted, the factory front driveshaft is asked to work at angles it was never designed for. The result is often a vibration that builds with speed, a clunk through the gears, or premature wear on the universal joints. The Tom Wood's TWDC-D1F front double cardan driveshaft is built to solve exactly that problem, giving your lifted Rover a smoother, stronger connection between the transfer case and the front differential.
A double cardan shaft places two universal joints close together at one end, joined by a centering yoke with a greaseable center ball. This arrangement splits the operating angle between the two joints, so each one works through a gentler angle than a single joint could manage on its own. Tom Wood's generally recommends staying with a conventional two joint shaft on a Rover with no lift, and moving to a double cardan design as lift height approaches 76mm (3 in). For builds that go well beyond that, Tom Wood's also offers a multiple double cardan shaft with a double cardan at each end.
Every Tom Wood's Land Rover shaft is built with Gold Seal 1310 series universal joints. The 1310 series is the most widely used universal joint in the world, found in countless Ford, GM, Jeep, and Dodge applications, and it is very close in size and strength to the factory Land Rover universal joint. That means if a joint ever needs replacing down the road, you can find one at nearly any driveline shop or parts counter.
This shaft is made to order. Please include your flange to flange measurement in the checkout notes so it can be built to the correct length for your suspension. If no measurement is received, the shaft will be built to stock length. The shaft bolts to the transfer case and front differential flanges on the Discovery 1, and regular greasing of the center ball and joints is recommended, particularly given the shaft's proximity to exhaust heat.

*Each shaft is made to order, so a flange to flange measurement is required with every order. Please enter your measurement in the notes at checkout. Orders will not ship until we receive your measurement, so including it when you order keeps your shaft on schedule.*
[FAQ]
Will this driveshaft fit my Discovery 1?
The TWDC-D1F is built for the front driveline of the Discovery 1 (1994 to 1999) with the 3.9 or 4.0 liter Rover V8. Because each shaft is made to order, providing your flange to flange measurement at checkout ensures it is built to the right length for your lift.
Do I need a double cardan shaft if my Rover is lifted?
If your Rover has no lift, a conventional two joint shaft is usually the best choice. As lift height increases, the steeper driveline angle makes a double cardan design the better option for reducing vibration and joint wear.
What happens if a universal joint wears out?
Tom Wood's uses Gold Seal 1310 series universal joints, the most common size in the world. Replacements are easy to source from driveline shops and parts suppliers, so keeping your shaft in service is simple.
