G4GapG4 GAP IIDTool BT G4 Land Rover DoIP Diagnostic

The GAP IIDTool BT G4 Edition, part number G4GapG4, is GAP Diagnostic's current generation handheld diagnostic tool for Land Rover and Range Rover, and it is the version built for vehicles that communicate over DoIP. It plugs into the OBD2 port, pairs to a free app on your phone or tablet, and reads and clears faults across every system on the vehicle rather than the handful a generic code reader can see.

The reason the G4 exists comes down to how newer Rovers talk. Vehicles from 2017 to 2019 still run all diagnostic functions over the CAN busses, which earlier IIDTool generations handle. From 2020 onward some modules communicate exclusively over Diagnostic over IP, and a tool without DoIP simply cannot reach them. The G4 does both, which is why it is the only current IIDTool that covers a 2020 and newer Rover completely.

What you can actually do with it goes well past reading codes. Fault read and clear across all vehicle systems. Live data with up to eight values on screen at once, in graph or numerical view, which is what turns a vague intermittent complaint into something you can watch happen. Service routines including the service reminder reset. Manual component activation, so you can command an output and see whether the part or the wiring is at fault. Calibrations.

Then there are the advanced programming functions, which are the reason a lot of Rover owners buy one of these in the first place. Air suspension height adjustment, front, rear or all four corners, with a guided calibration routine. Key programming. CCF editing, which is where you change how the vehicle behaves, things like daytime running lamps and seatbelt chimes. On the BT these functions are VIN locked, meaning they are enabled on the vehicle you register the tool to. One license is included, and up to eight more can be added if you look after more than one Rover.

Two versions are listed here. The standard tool, part number G4GapG4, covers everything GAP supports natively. The second version, part number GAPG4WA, adds the optional adapter for older vehicles that need it, and if your Rover is on the adapter list below, that is the one you want.

In the box you get the IIDTool G4 itself, a USB cable for firmware updates, and one VIN activation license. The app is free on iOS and Android, and firmware updates for the BT are free as well. You will want a reasonably current phone, since GAP specifies iOS 11 or later and Android 8.0 or later with Bluetooth 4.0.

Which Rovers does the G4 cover?

The list below is the current coverage from GAP. Anything in the first group works with the standard tool. Anything in the second group needs the optional adapter, which is the second version listed on this page. The classic Defender L316 and the Range Rover L322 from 2002 to 2009 are not supported by the G4.

Do I need the G4, or will an earlier IIDTool do?

If your Rover is a 2020 or newer, you need the G4, because some modules on those vehicles only talk over DoIP and earlier tools cannot reach them. From 2017 to 2019 everything still runs over the CAN busses, so an earlier generation tool can handle those, though the G4 covers them too.

What does VIN locked mean?

The advanced programming functions, things like air suspension height adjustment and CCF editing, are enabled per vehicle. One license comes with the tool, so it is ready for your Rover out of the box. If you look after more than one, GAP allows up to eight additional licenses on a BT.
